Here are the nine people who’ve applied to fill the House District 40 vacancy

The Alaska Democratic Party this afternoon released the names of the nine people who applied (eight met the legal requirements) to fill House District 40 seat, which was vacated by Rep. Dean Westlake last month amid sexual harassment accusations. Applications closed Thursday at 5 p.m.

According to the news release, eight applicants that meet the legal requirements of being a registered Democrat and a resident of the district for a year. They are:

  • Sandra J. Shroyer Beaver, Kotzebue
  • Timothy E. Gavin, Jr., Buckland
  • Rosie Hensley, Kotzebue
  • Leanna Mack, Utqiagvik
  • Lewis J. Pagel, Kotzebue
  • Patrick Savok, Kotzebue
  • Eugene S. Smith, Kotzebue
  • Nicole N. Stoops, Kotzebue

The party rejected the application of Richard J. Frank, but didn’t specify which specific requirement he failed to meet.

The applicants will be interviewed by party officials starting this weekend. Three finalists will be forwarded to Gov. Bill Walker on Jan. 15, who will select one to be seated in the Alaska Legislature within nine days. With the Legislature set to gavel in on Jan. 16, it means that the seat will be left vacant. Fellow Democrats in the House will have an opportunity to weigh in on the governor’s decision through a confirmation vote.

House District 40 Announces Plans to Interview
All Applicants to Fill State Representative Vacancy

Anchorage, AK — House District 40 Chair Jane Winzer announced today the district party leadership’s decision to interview all applicants that have applied and met the constitutional requirements to serve as a state representative for District 40.

Following a January 4, 2017 application deadline, the Alaska Democratic Party received nine applications to fill the vacant seat created by the resignation of Representative Dean Westlake.

All candidates will receive equal consideration by the nominating committee over interviews beginning this weekend.

  • Rosie Hensley, Kotzebue
  • Leanna Mack, Utqiagvik
  • Lewis J. Pagel, Kotzebue
  • Patrick Savok, Kotzebue
  • Eugene S. Smith, Kotzebue
  • Nicole N. Stoops, Kotzebue

Per state law, all applicants must reside in House district 40 for at least one year and be a registered Democrat. An application from Richard J. Frank will not be considered because the candidate did not meet these requirements.

The nominating committee will release the names of the three applicants to be forwarded to Governor Walker following the conclusion of the interview process.
