With the Alaska Division of Elections closing in on certifying Dean Westlake’s win over Rep. Ben Nageak in the House District 40 democratic primary by Friday, Nageak and Alaska Republicans are sending signals the fight may have just begun.
The legislative hearing he oversaw was called to look into irregularities at Alaska polling places during the August 16th primary election. There was blame to be laid, but unfortunately, Stoltze and company were, so hell bent on selling the Trump-ish narrative that the system is rigged to rouse the conservative base by merely speaking of voting irregularities that they completely missed the rightful criticism that overseer of elections Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott deserves.

The Upshot, a New York Times section devoted to data-driven reporting on politics, policy, and economics, gives Democrats a 57% chance of winning the Senate and Sen. Lisa Murkowski a greater than 99% chance of winning re-election.
This evening The Midnight Sun has received a press release from the Alaska Democratic Party’s candidate for State House District 22 Ed Cullinane saying he has filed a letter with the Alaska Division of Elections withdrawing from the race.
The Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) staff is recommending the agency drop the hammer on three candidates from last spring’s Anchorage Assembly elections, issuing fines totaling $91,500. On August 1st, Terre Gales, Adam Trombley, and Treg Taylor all received fines of over $1,000 according to documents from the state agency that monitors campaign finance laws.
Buck down folks, the news isn’t good. New numbers released yesterday show the federal deficit jumped 35% this year and is set to almost triple in the next ten years. As if that isn’t a troubling enough sign, the federal government itself now projects significantly slower economic growth over the next ten years. And we are still waiting for either presidential candidate to notice.
Most political prognosticators view Alaska as solidly in the Donald Trump column in the presidential election, but that isn’t stopping Trump’s campaign and that of Hillary Clinton from showing signs of life in the Last Frontier.
