11:34 (Final update for the night) –
The top of Tuesday’s primary election didn’t carry many surprises: Alyse Galvin won the Democrat Party’s nomination for the U.S. House, Mike Dunleavy has won the Republican Party’s nomination for governor on a ballot that doesn’t feature the state’s independent governor and the Les Gara-endorsed Zack Fields took home a wide margin of victory in the Democratic Primary for the true blue House District 20.
It’s down the ticket that carries a lot of intrigue.
Three incumbents are in varying stages of peril tonight: Sen. Peter Micciche and Reps. Charisse Millett and Gabrielle LeDoux.
Millett appears headed to defeat in a Republican primary where her weak fundraising had to go up against Josh Revak and a $30,000 independent expenditure group. She’s currently down by nearly 200 votes, or nearly 15 points.
Meanwhile things are much closer for LeDoux and Micciche. LeDoux, a Republican who joined Democrats in a coalition to rule the House, is only up over Aaron Weaver by six votes. A win here would be great news for the party Republicans and grim news for the House Bipartisan Coalition.
Micciche, meanwhile, is down by 13 votes behind Ron Gillham in the Republican primary. Gillham didn’t run much of a campaign according to campaign finance reports.
LeDoux and Micciche sparred famously this year over Micciche’s smoke-free workplaces bill.
The House Bipartisan Coalition also won’t be able to look to House District 9 for the return of an old ally. With 82 percent of the vote in, Republican Rep. George Rauscher has nearly 50 percent of the vote. Union-backed groups were hoping for a Colver win here. He’s in second with 28 percent of the vote.
If the margins in this race hold, it’s likely one of the most decisive primary victories for the district. Then again, things could still stand to change a lot as the geographically massive district has distinctly different politics.
Unions can take solace in a pair of apparent victories in Eagle River. Union-backed Republican candidates Nancy Dahlstrom and Kelly Merrick both appear to be headed to victory as of tonight. Merrick has a nearly 200-vote lead over Jamie Allard for the open seat with 100 percent of the precincts reporting.
11:23 p.m. –
- There’s no movement on Rep. LeDoux’s tight primary. Still a difference of six votes.
- Rep. Louise Stutes can rest easy with her contested primary, where she holds 54 percent of the vote with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
- There’s a bit of tightening in the House District 23 Republican primary, where Connie! Dougherty’s lead has gone from about 10 points to about six. The vote tally is up to 75 percent.
- UPSET ALERT! With 86 percent of the vote in, Josh Revak’s lead over Rep. Millett is at nearly 15 points. It looks like it could be game over for the Republican Minority Leader.
- There’s 88 percent of the vote in for the Republican primary for House District 26. It looks like Laddie Shaw will have it there with 42 percent of the current vote tally.
11:20 p.m. –
- Mead Treadwell has conceded victory to Mike Dunleavy in the race for the Republican nomination for governor.

— Kyle Hopkins (@kylehopkinsAK) August 22, 2018
- Rep. Jason Grenn won’t have to face former Rep. Liz Vazquez in the general election, as long as the results in the House District 22 Republican primary hold true. With 86 percent of the precincts reporting, Sara Rasmussen is holding a 10-point lead in the primary.
- House Majority Leader Chris Tuck won’t have to face former Democrat-turned-Republican Forrest McDonald in the general election. Connie! Dougherty has a 10-point lead with 63 percent of the vote in.
- Rep. Chuck Kopp has handily defeated Stephen Duplantis in the Republican primary by a massive margin. With all the slinging by Duplantis you would’ve thought this might have been a closer one.
10:47 p.m. –
- UPSET ALERT! With 94 percent of the vote in, Republican Sen. Micciche is down by fewer than 30 votes against Ron Gillham.
- UPSET ALERT! House Minority Leader Charisse Millett is more than 10 points down behind Republican challenger Josh Revak. Millett’s fundraising has been lackluster this season and Revak’s been backed by a Jeff Landfield-run PAC.
- UPSET ALERT! With 80 percent of the vote in, Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux is only up by SIX votes over Republican challenger Aaron Weaver. If the GOP can boot LeDoux, that’s a big win for the party and potentially a big setback for the House Bipartisan Coalition.
- While LeDoux’s in a tough spot, the union-backed potentially bipartisan coalition-friendly Republicans out in Eagle River are both winning their fields. With 100 percent reporting, Kelly Merrick has topped the field by about 6 points for House District 14 while Nancy Dalhstrom holds 42 percent of the vote–a 10-point lead–with 67 percent of precincts reporting for House District 13.
- The Les Gara-endorsed Zack Fields has the very blue House District 20 in hand with just about 50 percent of the vote in his three-way race with 100 percent of precincts counted. Groh finishes the night with a little north of 30 percent of the vote. Rojas finishes distant third.
10:02 p.m. –
- Gubernatorial candidate Mike Dunleavy holds a big lead over the Republican challengers with 47 precincts reporting.
- Independent Alyse Galvin also has what’s likely an insurmountable lead with 54 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House.
- UPSET ALERT! Sen. Peter Micciche is down in his primary against Ron Gillham. Micciche lags by fewer than 100 votes (1,679 to Gillham’s 1,707). 76 percent of the vote in Senate District O has been counted.
- UPSET ALERT! Rep. Charisse Millett, who like Micciche is the leader of her caucus in the House, is also at risk of an upset. There’s only 42 percent of the vote counted in House District 25, but Josh Revak is up by nearly 100 votes, or about a 10-point margin.
This will be updated.
