A total of 3,726 Alaskans cast votes on the first day of early in-person voting in Alaska on Monday, bringing the grand total of Alaskans who’ve already voted in this year’s general election to 46,322.

Of that number, Democrats are the leading political party in both early in-person voting (944) and in returning by-mail absentee ballots (12,593) with a grand total of 13,537 ballots already cast. Meanwhile, Republicans have cast 10,301 votes so far (888 early in-person and 9,413 absentee).

Independent voters—those registered as undeclared or nonpartisan—account for the busiest political affiliation with a combined 20,627 votes already cast.

Thanks to concerted efforts around pandemic safety and voting access, early voting is on pace to far surpass 2016’s early voting rates when 75,357 people cast ballots ahead of election day. Alaskans can request a by-mail absentee ballot for any reason through this Saturday. Early in-person voting and early in-person absentee voting is underway throughout the state at dozens of locations throughout Alaska. Ballots cast at early voting locations, of which there are 10, will be counted on election day if they are cast by Oct. 29.

Anchorage and Juneau are home to the house districts with the highest numbers of early voting, with Democrats and independents holding slim to massive margins over Republicans in nearly every district.

The highest early vote rate belongs to House District 28 where 2,154 votes have already been cast. There, Democrat-backed independent Suzanne LaFrance is vying against Republican James Kaufman for a seat held by Republican Rep. Jennifer Johnston, who lost to Kaufman in the Republican primary.

In South Anchorage’s House District 28, ballots have already been cast by 1,024 independents, 575 Democrats and 478 Republicans. An additional 4,242 absentee ballots have been requested in the district but not yet returned to the Division of Elections.

In East Anchorage’s House District 27, where Democrat Liz Snyder is running a fierce campaign to unseat Republican Rep. Lance Pruitt, a total of 1,642 votes have already been cast. 564 votes have been cast by Democrats, 680 by independents and 330 by Republicans. An additional 2,668 absentee ballots have been requested in the district but not yet returned to the state.
