It will waste resources better spent on other efforts. And it will jeopardize the progressive majority on the Anchorage Assembly.
Save for a handful of hearings by the underappreciated House Ways and Means Committee, the special session has done little except wear out what little patience remains in the Legislature, run up per diem payments and drive a wedge between the already-related-in-name-only moderate and far-right Republicans.
Its’ becoming increasingly clear that the plan is to make the job of serving the public so difficult and hostile that it’ll drive away anyone not ready to rubberstamp Bronson’s agenda.
We need to work with leaders and experts from local communities, to calmly get people in those communities the truth instead of riling up opposition to safe practices. This week the Governor did the opposite, writing an Op-Ed blaming others for this state’s mounting illness and death toll. He painted a rosy picture of where Alaska is. Here are facts he left out in praising the job he’s done.
Folks, this is the height of silliness. It’s as obvious as the coming of winter to Alaska.

The stage is set for the Anchorage Assembly to make a push on masking, which sets the stage for a major showdown with hands-off Mayor Dave Bronson, which all has some other interesting twists.
The health care reinforcements are much needed, but it does nothing to meaningful curb the unchecked spread of covid-19 in Alaska. Alaska’s leaders have at worst actively fueled the vitriol that has made the entire situation that much worse and at best have refused to confront disinformation in any meaningful way.
It’s time for a federal solution. The Equality Act would start to address these issues by guaranteeing basic, fundamental protections for all people in employment, housing and public accommodations regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It would ensure transgender and nonbinary people are guaranteed the opportunity to work and provide for their families, secure a home for their loved ones, and access life-saving medical care – free from harassment, violence, and discrimination.
