Democrats Nominate Candidates to Fill Gruenberg’s Vacancy

The Alaska Democratic Party today announced the three names they are giving Gov. Bill Walker to replace former Rep. Max Gruenberg. Governor Walker will have 30 days from the date of the vacancy to make his appointment. He does not have to choose one of the three candidates nominated by the Democratic Party. His choice will have to be approved by the House Democrats.






Governor Mourns Passing Of Rep. Max Gruenberg

Governor Bill Walker and Lt. Governor Byron Mallott today mourned the passing of Representative Max Gruenberg.

“This is a significant loss for all of Alaska,” Governor Walker said. “Max has been a steady and respected voice in the legislature. Donna and I are covering his loved ones with prayer during this very difficult time.”

Rep. Gruenberg is survived by his wife, Kayla Epstein, his sons and daughter-in-law.

Governor Walker ordered flags to be lowered concurrently for Rep. Gruenberg and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.



A Tale of Two State Budget Presentations

I’ve been curious how average Alaskans, consumed by their daily lives and seemingly uninterested in policy minutiae, were digesting all of this budget talk. Since no broad-based statewide polling has yet been made public, I thought I would attend two very different budget presentations for audiences of opposing political views to see just how those audiences were taking it in.
